A closer look at the data evidence on Ethiopia shows that both actual and equilibrium real effective exchange rates have been depreciating from the first quarter of 1993 to the fourth quarter of 2004. After 2004, while the actual value started to significantly appreciate, the equilibrium value has followed a fairly constant trend. An econometric analysis (Vector Autoregression) reveals that government consumption spending and growth in net domestic credit depreciates the real effective exchange rate both in the short run and the long run; while the ratio of fiscal deficit to high powered money and real international price of oil also lead to currency depreciation in the short run. The real international price of oil has an opposite impact in the long run. On the other hand, the degree of foreign exchange and capital controls lead to currency appreciation in the long run. Furthermore, long run equilibrium exchange rate in Ethiopia hasn't been constant and misalignment ranged from 30.7% to -34.3% during the period between 1993 and 2008. Such trends call for closer attention to combat a fall in international competitiveness and possible currency crises.
Relational query optimizers are not always robust. They depend on statistics and cost models which are often inaccurate, and sometimes absent. They fail to detect correlations, and cannot efficiently handle the large search space of big queries. Those challenges and their impact on the quality of the chosen plan are aggravated in the context of XML. In fact, in XML, it is harder to collect and maintain representative statistics. Moreover, the search space of plans is usually larger than that of relational queries, due to the higher number of joins in a typical XQuery. ROX, our Run-time Optimizer for XQueries, is autonomous, not depending on statistics and cost models, is robust in always finding a good execution plan benefiting from the detected correlations, and is efficient in exploring the space of plans. ROX moves the optimization to run-time, and interleaves it with query execution, defining the plan incrementally. Sampling techniques are used to accurately estimate the cardinality and cost of operators. We introduce chain sampling, the first generic and robust method to deal with any type of correlated data. ROX can be used in both pipelined and materialized database systems.
A general amnesty puts the Daltons back on the streets, something Lucky Luke isnt happy about. And, to make it worse, they seem to have become model citizens. Its all an act, though, and it doesnt take long for the stupidest quartet in the West to be back behind bars. Luke is already riding off into the sunset... But hes not counting on a riled-up Apache tribe that attacks the penitentiary where the Daltons are locked up...
The ENSEMBLE activity is a part of the Joint Research Centre institutional support activity to DG-TREN. It consists of a network of 22 institutions operating 24 long range atmospheric transport and dispersion models, which differ in terms of concept and numerical code and make use of various numerical weather forecasts. The model predictions produced by these institutions are collected on the ENSEMBLE system located at Joint Research Centre in Ispra. A web facility allows the remote users to consultant in real-time and independently the model results present on the system. The report is devoted to the application of the “hot-run” version of the ENSEMBLE system in an international event – the ECURIE exercise. It contains the description of the simulation results provided during the exercise with particular emphasis on the possible exchange of information between ECURIE, ENSEMBLE and EURDEP systems operated at JRC.
The devaluation of money (inflation), influences the wealth of any individual. Some streams of income, like for example salaries, are protected against inflation by a contract. Financial investments however, are not. The risk of inflation is therefore regarded as one of the main sources of systematic investment risk on a national level, but increasingly also on an international level. In this study, the long-term inflation protection of residential real estate compared to bonds and stocks is investigated. The relation between the nominal returns and both the expected and unexpected inflation for sixteen member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) is examined. The unique dataset which is available for this study, makes an international comparison both possible and meaningful. The results are especially useful for professionals in real estate finance or investment, but shed a light on the exposure of individual households as wel.
The night?s over for Ulysses Galen. It started going bad for the big Greek when a knife was drawn, then there was an axe, then he was being chased and shot at. Now Galen is lying dead in the middle of a Harlem street. But the night?s just beginning for detectives Grave Digger Jones and Coffin Ed Johnson. Because they have a smoking gun but it couldn?t have killed Galen, and they had a suspect but a gang called the Real Cool Moslems took him. The purpose of this book is to examine the long run relationship between economic growth and corruption in Bangladesh over the period 1984-2008. In this study, I have extended the neoclassical model of economic growth by Solow (1956) including human capital and public sector explicitly at first. Then, I have incorporated corruption into the augmented model using a specific functional form for total factor productivity and three other channels to show impact of corruption on real GDP per capita. To investigate empirically the existence of a long run relationship or co-integration between corruption and real GDP per capita, I have used Auto-Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) Bounds Test method. The results of co-integration test confirms that there is a long run relation among corruption, GDP per capita and other determinants of GDP over the study period. The long run estimates indicate that corruption has direct negative impact on per capita GDP i.e. economic development of Bangladesh.

"The Unadulterated Cat" is becoming an endangered species as more and more of us settle for those boring mass-produced cats the ad-men sell us - the pussies that purr into their gold-plated food bowls on the telly. But the Campaign for Real Cats sets out to change all that by helping us to recognise a true, unadulterated cat when we see one. For example: real cats have ears that look like they've been trimmed with pinking shears; real cats never wear flea collars... or appear on Christmas cards... or chase anything with a bell in it; real cats do eat quiche. And giblets. And butter. And anything else left on the table, if they think they can get away with it. Real cats can hear a fridge door opening two rooms away...
